Episode 4: How My In-House Counsel Experience Helps My Clients Stay Ahead of the Competition
After starting my career at one of the largest IP specializing firms in the US in Washington, DC, I moved to a multi-national corporation to manage a patent portfolio of over 1200 patents and patent applications. I quickly learned that being in-house requires a different perspective that most outside counsel does not possess. I developed strong relationships with the company’s inventors and instituted a competitive monitoring program to understand where competitors were moving to secure patents and use that knowledge to prepare stronger patents for the company. By immersing myself in the company’s technology, I gained an understanding of the field of technology that wasn’t possible for outside counsel. All of that experience and knowledge enabled me to advance the company’s position relative to its competition.
Mr. Lesperance discusses:
- How he transitioned from outside counsel to in-house.
- The change in perspective from individual inventions to a family of inventions and technology.
- Working with outside counsel and communicating the needs of the company for the long term.
- Using the experience he gained in-house to build relationships with the inventors, managers, and other decision makers.
- The relationships are key to crafting strong patents that keep the competition away and secure future growth for the company.
